Sometimes volunteers say that their time of service ruins their life – seeing the realities of hunger and homelessness and pain strips away a lot of the illusions that allow us to live in comfortable ignorance. Not only is it sometimes hard to live with the reality of hurt in the world, it also tends to instill in us what someone once called a “highly sensitive bull-shit detector.” Pretense and hypocrisy become especially hurtful, and, it seems, especially common.
